Sony's new VAIO L series is a concept all-in-one PC that marries both form and function that is guaranteed to appeal to a wide range of audience.

The merging of a powerful PC complete with a high-end 15.4" LCD display and stylish polycarbonate chassis makes it a must-have device, if only it were real. Embedded within the VAIO L series is a Sound Reality audio chip and a pair of 3W speakers to give you the best on-the-go entertainment experience possible.

In terms of hardware specifications, we are looking at a foldable keyboard and touchpad, Intel's Core 2 Duo T5600 1.83GHz processor, a 120GB hard drive, and 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM. When will this be available to the masses? Only time can tell, so you might as well start saving up for one today. IMHO, it looks lost in No Man's Land, stuck between the ephemeral world of a notebook and desktop.

We've already seen that the Asus Lamborghini VX2 is a highly desirable piece of kit, but it just got better...

Despite no official confirmation from Asus itself we know that its flagship notebook is about to receive the Santa Rosa treatment. Consequently, all the benefits of the new platform including a second generation 'Merom' Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, NAND flash memory caching, Dynamic Acceleration and wireless n connectivity will be present under that distinctive yellow casing.

On top of this we hear that while the 15.4in 1680 x 1050 resolution display remains the same, a T7700 (2.4GHz) CPU will be at its heart along with a Blu-ray drive, 512MB GeForce 8600M GT graphics card, 2GB RAM and a 5,400RPM 160GB HDD. Ports will include HDMI, e-SATA, ExpressCard and Gigabit Ethernet with the whole machine weighing just 2.8Kg.

The name of the latest Lambo laptop is also likely receive a tweak, being dubbed the 'VX2 S' – I can't possibly imagine what the additional letter could stand for... ;)

Obviously there is no word on pricing or an official release date, but given the swarm of Santa Rosa based laptops at this moment in time a June or July launch would prove the very definition of logic.

The new Asus Lamborghini will have the new release at the beginning of 2007 but Asus have not said if the new laptops will have Intel or AMD processors (cheeky), Sunny Han, director of marketing at Asus said “We have to discuss everything with our partner first,”.

The current Asus Lamborghini VX1 has features such as 15-inch display, Intel Core Duo processor, NVIDIA GeForceGo 7400VX graphics card that is with 512MB of video memory and a 160GB hard drive.

The 6400, like so much of the Dell range, comes in a variety of user-defined guises so bear this in mind when it comes to the performance numbers and features I'll be making reference to. Indeed, in the time we've had the notebook, a Dell special offer has upped the memory to 2GB from the two 512MB modules of DDR 2 SDRAM featured in our version.

Our particular model also came equipped with Intel's impressive new mobile Core 2 Duo processor, the T7200, which ticks along at 2.0GHz off a 667MHz frontside bus. 4MB of shared L2 cache helps speed things along too. Like the entire mobile range of Core 2 Duo processors it operates at between 1.0375V and 1.3V and runs comparatively cool for its speed.

Furthermore, our test unit arrived with an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 graphics chip and not the X1300 currently offered on Dell's website as standard for all but the most basic version of the 6400.

Proof of the Inspiron's multimedia aspirations is the array of seven external play control buttons lined up across the front face, all fully accessible with the lid closed. These are flanked on either side by a pair of what must be the loudest stereo speakers I've heard from a notebook. And, like the control buttons, the speakers are unobstructed when the lid is closed.

At the heart of any good notebook is the screen and this 15.4in widescreen doesn't disappoint. Our unit uses the standard 1,280 x 800 display but with Dell's Truelife glossy finish. It was bright, sharp and vivid though in common with other similar screens reflections are evident.

Acer is getting better on spec and price.Acer has been on a roll of late with its Gemstone series of laptops, which have enjoyed huge popularity in the budget and value segment.

Acer is offering a few innovations in this range, such as 16:9 aspect LCD panels, Blu-ray drives, and a new touch panel for multimedia management.

At the launch event of the new series, it was clear from the onset that Acer had consciously decided to step away from its rather drab designs of the past. The 6920G is certainly a step up. It sports a glossy top panel and a well-designed (though highly reflective) LCD panel. The area around the LCD panel is of a similar glossy nature as the lid.

The area next to the keyboard is unique to the new series. Just above the keyboard is a huge speaker grill that forms the basis of the new Dolby 2.0 speaker system. The left side of the keyboard is occupied by the new CineDash Media Console, which Acer has introduced with this series.

This touch panel allows you to manipulate Windows Media Player or other compatible players. It also interfaces with Acer’s own version of a media center called Acer Arcade Deluxe.

Powerful laptops are now available at prices unimaginable even months ago. And one of the main players who's been leading the charge is Acer.

One of the biggest worries people have when they consider an Acer product is its design and usability. This is an issue that had become so worrisome that a lot of people have often overlooked Acer’s products due to the needlessly bad reputation they acquired from such hearsay.

The Acer 4520 is an amazingly well-designed laptop in all respects. To start with, its body is nicely constructed with nice thick plastic.

Another great aspect of this laptop is its size and
shape. A normal 14 inch laptop is quite thick and there is often a lot of wasted space.

In a similar vein, the keyboard offers great tactile feedback, well-spaced keys, and an ergonomic layout.

In terms of peripheral connectivity, the laptop is certainly not lacking. It offers a full range of options, ranging from four USB slots to a card reader and more.

The Toshiba Satellite A135-S4499 has a fairly forgettable name but promise to remember everything you throw at it. This laptop is one of the first entry level notebooks with two hard drives for extra storage or automatic backup.

The laptop has 2GB of memory and an Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at 1.66GHz. The two 120GB hard drives can be configured in three ways.

1. They can be used separately
2. Both can be chained together to create one large drive
3. One can be used to back up the other

The 15.4in screen has a resolution of 1,280 X 800pixels and includes a Mobile Intel graphics chipset along with a DVD writer, for USB ports, a Firewire port and a microphone. The laptop runs Windows Vista Ultimate, the most advanced version of Microsoft’s new operating system and has a 5 in 1 media card adaptor.

If 240GB of hard drive space sounds like too much to carry around, remember that just a few years ago a 40MB hard drive was a monster. New York Times Special Features

Our love of the original Eee PC is no secret. Coming back from last year's Computex in Taipei we were all awash with geeky excitement over the ultra-portable laptop we’d been looking for all our lives.

For a shade over £200 it was all we wanted from a machine we could literally take anywhere with us.

An Eee too far?Luckily for Asus it wasn't just us who found the first iteration instantly desirable - if you try looking for a new 701 4G it's still rare as hen's teeth or dog's eggs. Now comes the inevitable update, the 900, the 8.9inch-screened version we first got our hands on at this year's CeBIT. Is it as immediately exciting though as its smaller predecessor, or is it an Eee too far?

Much better screen

The increased resolution this gives is what really makes this version of the Eee most special. At 1024 x 600 there's no more fiddly scrolling around web pages or straining your eyes to see what you're typing. To be fair the original 7inch panel was still impressive for its size, but we always wanted more.

The multi-touch, MacBook Air-style touchpad is another neat addition giving you the ability to scroll around simply by placing two fingers on the pad and sliding up and down. It's a neater solution than the sometimes awkward side-scrolling method employed by the 701. You can also use this function to zoom in and out; handy but a little gimmicky.

Override the underclocked processor

Asus has also included an updated BIOS allowing you to run the Celeron CPU at stock speeds rather than the underclocked 600MHz set at as standard on the 701. The slightly larger chassis (around 1cm deeper and a shade taller) helps to provide sufficient cooling to keep the system stable at the higher clock speeds. This will give more of a noticeable difference should you get the more demanding Microsoft installation on your machine.

We’re not without our reservations though, with the bigger screen comes higher power draw and with that a larger power block to give it the 12v it needs over the 9.5v of the 701. Supposedly this offers faster charging of the battery, but the original, single lead offering had a longer cable and was simply more practical on the move. The higher power draw inevitably has an impact on battery life - gone is the 4-hour up time, replaced by around 2.5 hours. Less ideal on the move.

More memory

The 1GB RAM that comes pre-installed on the 900 is also slower than that which nestled in the 701. Only by 267MHz, but is still possible evidence of a cut corner. It's possible this was necessary to keep the unit price down, but when you can pick up a stick of DDR2 667 for £15 that seems unlikely.

Price is a massive issue

At the £220 price mark the 701 was pretty much a no-brainer, it was cheap and did everything you could want. Now with the 900 you actually have to make a decision, weigh up whether you want a serious laptop you can use for everything but gaming or do you want something that is significantly smaller, yet with far less grunt for the same price?
