Unlike normal Sony Vaios, which take pride in their slim looks, the AR69 is a giant. This should hardly come as a surprise, considering it's been designed as a full-blown desktop replacement. It weighs in at 3.9 kilos and measures 416 × 33.5-41.5 × 299.5 mm (WHD). While this makes it a bit smaller than the Acer 8920G, it's nevertheless one of the biggest consumer laptops currently available.

In a somewhat unusual move, Sony has given the Vaio's hinges a robust-looking metallic effect. This metal strip runs all the way around the laptop; even the mouse keys have the same finish. Thankfully this strip is a darker shade of black-silver and contrasts well with the overall finish. The AR69GU is very sturdy; it boasts a thick plastic body that wouldn't squeak even on the hardest tap. Neither will it flex, as it’s just too big and solid.

The keyboard maybe a tad small, but it does offer a good working experience. The keys offer good feedback and are quite pleasant to type on. The only downside is that the keys sometimes don’t register a click. This is simply because the keyboard employs a deep-click system, for which the key has to be pounded a little harder than usual. While this is not a big issue, touch typists may sometimes see funny errors.

Sony's new VAIO L series is a concept all-in-one PC that marries both form and function that is guaranteed to appeal to a wide range of audience.

The merging of a powerful PC complete with a high-end 15.4" LCD display and stylish polycarbonate chassis makes it a must-have device, if only it were real. Embedded within the VAIO L series is a Sound Reality audio chip and a pair of 3W speakers to give you the best on-the-go entertainment experience possible.

In terms of hardware specifications, we are looking at a foldable keyboard and touchpad, Intel's Core 2 Duo T5600 1.83GHz processor, a 120GB hard drive, and 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM. When will this be available to the masses? Only time can tell, so you might as well start saving up for one today. IMHO, it looks lost in No Man's Land, stuck between the ephemeral world of a notebook and desktop.

Today in London in a somewhat understated fashion, Sony released details of its latest Vaio notebook range: the TZ series, aimed predominately at the higher end of the market.

Cast in carbon fibre and sporting an Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 or U7500 processor, the TZ range features a 11.1in WXGA 1366 x 768 screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio. It also sports a 2GB DDR2 SDRAM, either 80GB or 100GB hard disk and integrated dual layer DVD±R/RW RAM optical drive.

Weighing in at 1.19kg, they also ship with an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, Windows Vista and 802.11 a b g, Bluetooth. Pricing details however, were unavailable as was the actual date of availability
